How to Wash Knotless Braids? Step-by-Step

Washing your hair when it’s in a protective style is just as important as washing it when it’s out — your hair still needs to be cleaned and moisturized.

How to Wash Knotless Braids

What You’ll Need:

  • shampoo
  • conditioner (optional)
  • leave-in condition
  • oil
  • mousse
  • water

Step One: Damp Your Hair

I only focus on the roots and strands of my hair when necessary, never drenching it. In order to make massaging my shampoo into my hair easier, I simply wet it with a spray bottle in the first step.

Step Two: Shampoo Your Hair

You can use any shampoo, but Taliah Wajiid’s Bamboo and Coconut Milk Moisturizing Mint Shampoo is one that I like to use. Some shampoos are simply too thick or too watery and can slow down the process. The tool and consistency make it easier to clean and get into your braids.

I massage my roots and strands after adding my shampoo to thoroughly clean them.

Step Three: Rinse Out Shampoo

Although you can submerge yourself entirely, I personally prefer to avoid getting my hair completely wet if I can help it. I choose to wash the shampoo out of my hair by taking a cup of water and pouring it over the affected areas.

On average, I repeat steps two and three about three times. Additionally, I would use a wet rag to ensure that all buildup was removed by getting between the braids at the root of my hair.

Step Four: Dry Hair

To absorb excess water, I dry my hair with a towel or t-shirt. At this stage, your hair doesn’t need to be completely dry, just manageable without water dripping all over the place.

Step Five: Wet Ends With Boiling Hot Water

To keep the ends of your braids sleek and tidy, dip your hair in hot, boiling water. I dip my hair once or twice for this step and leave it in until my hair is laid. It only takes a few seconds in reality.

Step Six: Dry Your Hair

I simply wait for my root to be completely dry under the dryer because I have a hooded dryer. I let my ends air dry after the top of my hair has dried.

I use a scarf to secure my hair so that it lies flat after I’ve dried it.

Step Seven: Moisturize My Hair

My essentials include oil and mousse. In addition to using Vigorol Olive Oil Mega Moisture Mousse on my ends, I also use Girl + Hair’s RESTORE+ Restoring Hair Treatment Balm on my roots.
